Paying homage to the original and iconic Moulin Rouge Windmill in Paris, FORM was tasked with the responsibility of meticulously recreating the red windmill for the Australian musical. This set-piece is a marvel of engineering and artistry, capturing the essence and grandeur of the original while meeting the practical demands of a stage production.

The windmill is assembled in three main sections: the base, the lid, and the blades. Each piece is designed to be easily disassembled for transport and reassembled on site, ensuring the windmill can travel with the production without losing its structural integrity.

During the setup, a skilled team of FORM production crew carefully swung the windmill into its elevated position high above the audience. This complex operation ensures the windmill is securely perched above the stage right box seats, providing a breathtaking focal point for the audience. The blades of the windmill are fully functional, adding a dynamic element to the production as they spin and light up during the pre-show and intermission, evoking the lively spirit of the original Moulin Rouge.

This faithful recreation not only pays tribute to the historical landmark but also enhances the theatrical experience, bringing a piece of Parisian charm to the Australian stage. After closing its Australian run in 2024 our windmill has since played in Korea, Japan and the Netherlands.
The combination of engineering prowess and artistic dedication in the construction and operation of the windmill reflects the commitment to maintaining the legacy of the iconic Moulin Rouge in every performance.
